Jazmine Sullivan

JazmineJazmine was born and raised to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pam is Jazmine's mom, and is an ex-backing singer who was a part of Philadelphia International Records. As a child the father of her was chosen to be one of the cities' Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. She and her family moved later into this historic building. In 2005, she graduated from the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts with an alumna of the vocal music department. Sullivan began singing as a contralto children's choir, then a few years later in the adult group. Sullivan did not get aware of secular music at the beginning. "When when I was 11 year old, a person asked me to join an album of gospel music. I was not going to do that," she says. "Then the time came that McDonald's held a contest for students in big cities I had the opportunity to sing 'Accept What God Does' on Showtime in the Apollo and the audience loved it". Stevie Wonder sang her part at her grandson's 13th birthday. Sullivan began her contract with Jive Records at the age fifteen. As a teenager she signed with Jive Records. The label recorded an entire album there, but the album was never released. Sullivan was ultimately dismissed by the label. There was a close relationship with Missy Elliott, who produced some of the songs for her debut project, which included the hit single "Backstabbers" composed by Timbaland and written by Elliott.
